Catherine O'Brien sent forward for trial next week on deception charges

Cork woman Catherine O’Brien has been sent forward for trial next week on three charges relating to deception.

Ms O’Brien of 28 An Ghrianan, Ballinroad, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, but formerly of Buttevant, Co Cork, appeared on Monday morning before Dungarvan district court in relation to five dishonest inducement offences regarding just under €30,000 belonging to two men.

The court was told that the book of evidence has been served in respect of three charges, with the case now being sent forward for trial in Waterford circuit court next Tuesday, June 18.

She has been remanded in continuing custody with consent to bail, to appear before Clonmel district court on Tuesday morning on the two other charges. Judge Cephas Power was told that no application has been made for legal aid.

Ms O’Brien’s 89-year-old uncle, Edmund Hawe, was in court to submit evidence of adequate funds in an independent surety bank account, as per bail conditions. Judge Power approved Mr Hawe and remanded Ms O’Brien in custody with consent to bail, to appear before Clonmel district court on Tuesday morning.

Judge Power said Ms O’Brien must lodge €1,000 in bail herself and surrender all documents that could be used as travel documents. She also has to provide the number of a mobile phone that must be switched on at all times.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in 2018 and 2019 and relate to just under €30,000 belonging to two men.

She is accused of using deception to induce Michael Culhane to transfer €4,982 into a bank account she controlled, as well as inducing him to put a further €2,526 into a bank account.

The other charges relate to a French horse called Lingerville, with John Blake being “dishonestly by deception” being induced to pay €1,000 insurance for the mare, €20,000 for the purchase of the animal and €984 for the transport of Lingerville from France to Ireland.

Ms O’Brien did not speak during Monday morning’s hearing. Her long hair was tied back and she wore dark trousers and a green top.
